MANILA, Philippines – In an inspiring demonstration of medical service and humanitarian effort, the Sui Generis Mission, in partnership with the Cebu Doctors Group of Surgeons, is set to conduct the “Siargao Surgical Mission 2.0” from January 25 to 28 at the Siargao Island Medical Center.

This initiative, organized in collaboration with the Philippine Hernia Society and Cebu Doctor’s University Hospital, will provide free surgeries to residents, emphasizing inclusivity and neutrality, regardless of political affiliation or background.

Building on Success

Dr. Chloe Digal, Chief of Siargao Island Medical Center, shared that this year’s mission builds on the achievements of the inaugural Siargao Surgical Mission in 2023, co-organized by the Sui Generis Group and Congressman Bingo Matugas. However, with the ongoing election season, the mission’s organizing bodies have decided to operate independently to ensure the program remains a purely humanitarian endeavor. This decision underscores the mission’s commitment to fairness and non-partisanship, welcoming all Surigaonons to benefit from its services without fear of political bias.

A Transparent and Inclusive Process

To maintain transparency and ensure fairness, the mission’s organizers have implemented a clear protocol for patient selection. Only the Rural Health Units (RHUs) are authorized to manage the patient list. The RHUs are responsible for:

  • Checking potential patients.

  • Conducting free laboratory tests.

  • Screening individuals to confirm their suitability for surgery.

  • Finalizing the daily list of patients for the mission.

Residents are advised to disregard claims by any political groups or individuals asserting they can influence the patient list. Such claims are unfounded and contradict the mission’s principles. For proper assessment and listing, residents should coordinate directly with their local RHU health centers.

Prioritizing the Most Vulnerable

The mission prioritizes individuals in dire need of medical intervention, particularly those among the poorest of the poor. Surigaonons are encouraged to visit their RHU health centers for check-ups and consultations. Health centers will guide patients on their eligibility for surgery and ensure they are included on the list if needed.

Comprehensive Medical Services

The Siargao Surgical Mission 2.0 will address a wide range of medical needs during its four-day span. Doctors will dedicate 2.5 days to surgeries and the remaining time to follow-up care and completing additional procedures. Services include:

General Surgeries

  • Laparoscopic gallbladder surgeries (40 cases)

  • Adult and pediatric hernia surgeries (35 cases)

Specialized Surgeries

  • Head, neck, and breast surgeries (45 cases)

  • Vascular surgeries, including AV fistula creation (30 cases)

  • Gynecological surgeries (15 cases)

  • Anal surgeries (15 cases)

Eye and Dental Care

  • Cataract (30 cases) and pterygium surgeries (30 cases), plus screenings for 100 patients

  • Dental extractions (375 teeth)

  • Distribution of 500 eyeglasses through optometry services

Minor Surgeries

  • Removal of lumps and bumps (200 cases)

Support and Logistics

Although the mission is apolitical, it welcomes additional support from local leaders. Congressman Bingo Matugas is contributing logistical assistance by providing transportation for doctors and surgeons during their stay on the island, allowing the medical team to focus entirely on patient care.

A Call to Action

Surigaonons in need of surgical interventions are urged to follow proper channels by coordinating with their local RHUs. Avoid engaging with unauthorized individuals or groups claiming control over patient listings. This mission is open to everyone, as long as the correct process is followed.

A Mission of Hope and Healing

The Siargao Surgical Mission 2.0 exemplifies the power of collaboration and the dedication of medical professionals to serve humanity. With the unwavering support of the Sui Generis Mission, Cebu Doctors Group of Surgeons, and partner organizations, this mission aims to leave a lasting impact on the health and lives of Surigaonons.
