NBS - Plastics Free Cities Program Review
Feb 24, 2025 | WWF
The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Del Carmen extends its deepest gratitude to the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) for its unwavering support in advancing sustainability across key regions in the Philippines. Through three major engagement areas, WWF is helping drive impactful Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) to combat plastic pollution and promote circular economy practices.
Solutions for the Future in Palawan, Northern Leyte, and Siargao Islands
With the collaboration of WWF Netherlands and WWF Red Cross, the Plastics Free Cities Program is being implemented and upscaled across the Philippines. LGU Del Carmen is proud to be one of the beneficiaries of this initiative, which aims to reduce plastic waste and foster sustainable development in ecologically sensitive areas.
1. Nature-Based Solutions – Application for ASEAN Heritage Park
As part of the Plastic Smart Cities initiative, WWF supports a "No Plastic in Nature" agenda by integrating nature-based strategies. Del Carmen is working towards securing recognition as an ASEAN Heritage Park, reinforcing its commitment to biodiversity conservation and sustainable tourism.
2. Waste Management – Reviewing Thermal Decomposition Options
To address plastic waste effectively, LGU Del Carmen is exploring innovative waste-to-energy solutions, including thermal decomposition. This approach could provide a sustainable alternative to landfilling while minimizing environmental impact.
3. Circular Economy – Del Carmen MRF PPP for Store-Type Display
A key component of the program is the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project, which features a store-type display to promote recycling and upcycling. This initiative encourages community participation in waste segregation and resource recovery, driving the shift toward a zero-waste circular economy.
Scaling Up for Sustainable Development
Through this partnership, LGU Del Carmen aims to align strategies that promote long-term sustainability and create a replicable model for other municipalities. By integrating nature-based solutions, advanced waste management, and circular economy principles, we are paving the way for a cleaner, greener future.
Together with WWF, we are turning the tide on plastic pollution—one solution at a time.
