DOTr Plans Relocation of Congested Regional Airports in Southern Philippines

dotr

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is considering relocating several "congested" regional airports in the southern Philippines to address capacity issues and improve efficiency.

In an impromptu interview with reporters, Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista disclosed that the DOTr has identified the airports in Zamboanga, Dumaguete, Siargao, and Masbate as candidates for potential relocation. The move is part of a broader initiative to decongest and modernize airport infrastructure in the region.

"We have pinpointed the areas for relocation, and the government is gradually acquiring the necessary properties," Bautista explained. "This process will take some time."

Bautista also highlighted that there are international agencies and countries interested in financing the completion of these airport projects. "There are agencies or countries that are willing to finance or extend the financing to complete these airports," he said.

Despite the progress in planning and potential financing, Bautista acknowledged the complexities involved in such large-scale relocations. "The acquisition of land is a lengthy process," he admitted, indicating that the timeline for relocating the four airports will be extended.

The initiative underscores the DOTr's commitment to improving aviation infrastructure in the Philippines, ensuring that regional airports can handle increasing passenger volumes and provide better services to travelers.
