In 2023, Siargao, known as the country's premier surfing capital, experienced a remarkable rebound in tourism. The island saw a staggering 300% growth in tourist arrivals, marking a significant recovery from the setbacks of the previous years, which were marred by the COVID-19 pandemic and the devastating impact of Super Typhoon Odette.
Data from the Department of Tourism (DOT) revealed that Siargao Island alone welcomed more than 500,000 tourists in 2023, a stark increase from the 125,000 visitors recorded in 2022. Among these tourists, 476,000 were domestic travelers, highlighting the strong interest of local tourists in exploring the beauty of Siargao. Additionally, the island saw almost 54,000 foreign visitors, indicating its enduring appeal to international travelers.
SOA Del Norte First District Representative, Bingo Matuga, expressed optimism about the island's tourism sector, noting that preparations are underway for Siargao's hosting of the prestigious Charara International Surfing Cup this year. This event is expected to further boost the island's reputation as a top surfing destination.
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic and natural disasters, Siargao has demonstrated resilience and adaptability. In 2023, the island was ranked 10th among Asia's best islands in the CN Traveler Readers' Choice Awards, affirming its status as a must-visit destination for travelers seeking adventure, natural beauty, and vibrant culture.
As Siargao continues to recover and thrive, it stands as a shining example of resilience, showcasing the enduring allure of this tropical paradise to travelers from around the world.
