“The rest gave up due to injury and extreme fatigue,” said Nadine Vallejos, the event coordinator. This year’s race managed to live up the Carrera’s lofty billing as the country’s toughest race as five teams—Blood Red, Kamot, Green Peace, Ibaan, Simon Design, and Iligan Pride took the easy way out of the killer race and simply gave up. As for the winners, after checking into the last CP, the first three teams, Davao Eagles, Kalit Pepsi and Kalit Plantation, were still left in intense anticipation as it had taken hours before they were officially declared the winners. Sanctions Time and sanctions need to be computed and it was only after the last team crossed the finish line that they heaved a sigh of relief. Of all survivors it was the Davao Eagles that ended the grueling race in style as they took the top of the podium and the racers and the support crew Kith Aragones, Paulo Dino Ouano, Arvie Kane Abejuela, Leslie Herrero, Eric Luna and Jiffer Jatico, now have something to brag. Cebu teams Kalit Pepsi and Kalit Plantation worked together to hamper a shutout for the Cebuanos. Kalit Pepsi was bannered by Rico Valentin, Rodulfi Verdida, Nogie Biagan, Hazel Madamba, Macky Hermoso and Roel Nadela, while Team Kalit Plantation is manned by Ramses Urgel, Ronnie Muring, RJ Balbuena, Grace Bascon, Franz Baguio and Ricky Bello. Most of these were members of the defending champion team Team Kalit. Team Mulatto of Davao and Cuernos Blackstone of Dumaguete finished fourth and fifth places, respectively. Other teams that may not have won the top prizes, but still earned the bragging rights for finishing the “country’s toughest race” were Team Leyte, and Manila’s Conquer Nomads, T1-Avaya and KIKKM-Jajoma. The winners received cash prizes. The competition was made possible by Solar Sports, Third World Outdoors, Department of Tourism, Province of Surigao del Norte, the City of Surigao, SanMig Light, Graphic Star, Pitman and the Outpost. |

THREE hundred and fifty kilometers, a number of back-breaking challenges and some 80 hours later, only the fittest survived in the 2007 Carrera Habagat: Siargao-Bucas Grande Traverse, which wrapped up Friday night in Siargao Island.
